Your Name(or friends) in Kanji painted on a tee shirt
Most western people know what kanji are, Chinese characters used in Japanese to represent sounds, ideas or words. However many people don’t realize their own names can be represented in Kanji also.
Mind you it is not as simple as you may think. Sounds can often be represented by various kanji with differing meanings and the results can be amusing
Some names can have very positive translations or bizarre possibilities for example.
Walter can be written as ‘a kind husband who prepares tea’ or ‘a crow laughing in a rice field’.
Robin can be written as ‘a cheerful charming person’ or ‘a foolish fat person’.
Cynthia translates as the charming ‘beautiful woman of pure appearance’ or the unfortunate ‘noisy fat frog’.
Lee can mean- one who is wise and dignified- or a great badger.
Jack- a samurai who saves people with arrows- or a benevolent wild dog.
Sometimes however unfortunate names result in beautiful kanji and vice versa.
Should you wish your name translated into Japanese and painted on a tee-shirt .
They also make great souvenirs for friends back home and you get to choose the translation!
